Works Ministry Begins Palliative Repairs On Oke-Afa Bridge

The Federal Ministry of Works has commenced palliative repairs on the Oke-Afa-Isolo Bridge in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, following concerns over the deteriorating condition of the 35-year-old structure.

A section of the bridge, particularly the Isolo-Ikotun axis, has been closed to traffic to allow workers to carry out the repairs. The development has, however, resulted in increased transport fares as commercial operators have adjusted their routes to cope with the traffic restrictions.

The bridge serves as a major link between Oshodi-Isolo and Ejigbo, connecting densely populated communities including Isolo, Jakande, Oke-Afa and Ikotun.

Residents have raised concerns over the structure’s condition, blaming years of inadequate maintenance and the frequent movement of heavy-duty trucks for its deterioration.

The bridge reportedly has visible cracks, rusting reinforcement bars, damaged concrete and ageing support pillars. Some sections also have unstable guard rails and exposed iron rods, while weeds have grown through cracks on parts of the bridge deck.

Residents also expressed concern about sections of the bridge being used as illegal dumpsites, describing the situation as a threat to public health and safety.

Confirming the development, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, said the bridge had deteriorated to the point where repairs could no longer be delayed.

“The bridge has failed, so it needs to be repaired. We have to divide it into two. We will move to the other side when we are done with one section,” Dare said.

The closure has also affected traffic movement around the area, prompting the deployment of officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to manage traffic and minimise disruptions.

While the ongoing work is expected to provide temporary relief, residents and engineers have called for comprehensive rehabilitation of the bridge by the Federal and Lagos State governments to address its long-term structural challenges.
