45,000-Litre Fuel Tanker Overturns On Lagos Road

A tanker conveying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit has overturned on Ijako Road, inward Oke Oso, along the Ajah Expressway in Epe, Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Friday while the Mack tanker was ascending Ijako Hill, reportedly following a mechanical failure.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said it received a distress alert at about 11:32am and immediately deployed its Whales Team from the Epe Base to the scene. The team arrived four minutes after dispatch.

According to preliminary findings by the agency, the tanker’s propeller detached from its joint, causing the vehicle to lose momentum before overturning.

One of the tanker’s compartments was also found to be leaking, prompting emergency responders to commence immediate containment measures to prevent a fire outbreak and possible environmental damage.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said there were no reported fatalities or injuries in the incident.

He noted that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Oke Oso Station, had commenced containment efforts before LASEMA arrived at the scene.

The emergency operation was coordinated under the Incident Command System, with personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and representatives of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers involved in the response.

The agency said traffic was being managed to protect motorists and prevent secondary accidents.

An empty tanker was also mobilised to transfer the petroleum product from the overturned vehicle before recovery operations could commence.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended the emergency responders for their swift and coordinated intervention, stressing the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive disaster management.

He advised motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and avoid the affected area while recovery operations continue.

LASEMA said further updates would be provided as the situation develops, urging residents to contact the emergency lines 112 or 767 in the event of emergencies.
