FCT Police Order Crackdown On One-Way Driving, Traffic Robbery

ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has ordered a strict enforcement of traffic laws across the territory, directing its personnel to arrest and prosecute motorists who violate traffic regulations.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, gave the directive on Sunday while charging Divisional Police Officers and MOTOPOL personnel to ensure compliance with traffic laws.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the directive was aimed at improving road safety, ensuring the free flow of traffic and preventing avoidable loss of lives and property caused by traffic violations and reckless driving.

According to her, the commissioner specifically directed officers to intensify enforcement against motorists driving against traffic, popularly known as “one-way,” as well as other dangerous driving practices.

Adeh added that the command would increase patrols and surveillance around major roads, traffic-congested areas, junctions and stop signs to identify and arrest traffic robbers who take advantage of congestion and traffic stops to dispossess motorists and other road users of their valuables.

Sanusi, however, directed officers to conduct the enforcement exercise professionally and with civility, stressing the need for strict adherence to the rule of law.

He warned police personnel against using the operation as an avenue for extortion, harassment, intimidation or unlawful use of force.

The commissioner further stated that any officer found abusing the rights of members of the public or violating the directive would face disciplinary action.

The command urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic signs, avoid reckless driving and comply with traffic regulations.
