Lagos Seals 239 Facilities, Arrests 931 Over Environmental Violations
The Lagos State Government has intensified its environmental enforcement operations, sealing 239 facilities and arresting 931 individuals for various waste management offences across the state within the past year.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.
According to Wahab, the state’s Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance (MEC) operations were strengthened during the review period to ensure stricter adherence to environmental regulations and sanitation standards across Lagos.
He revealed that enforcement teams inspected 2,251 sites and issued 1,711 contravention notices as part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental compliance and public hygiene.
Wahab further stated that more than 650 tonnes of construction waste were evacuated during the period, while awareness campaigns on construction, demolition and disaster waste management were sustained through stakeholder engagements in collaboration with waste management partners.
The commissioner also noted that the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency expanded its environmental monitoring activities through the installation of modern air quality monitoring systems across the state.
According to him, LASEPA successfully completed 114 installations of air quality sensors and rehabilitated air pollution abatement facilities aimed at improving air quality management, reducing pollution and safeguarding public health.
In addition, the government introduced cleaner fish processing technology at Ago Egun in Makoko through the deployment of improved fish kilns designed to reduce smoke emissions and protect the health of local fish processors.
Wahab reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to strengthening environmental compliance, deploying modern technology and intensifying enforcement efforts to achieve a cleaner and healthier environment in Lagos.
