Motorists Lament Deteriorating Access Road Along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway
Motorists using the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway have expressed concern over the collapse of a section of the access ramp connecting the highway to the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway bridge, describing the situation as a major source of traffic congestion and safety risks.
The affected section, which has reportedly remained unattended for an extended period, has deteriorated further following recent rainfall, leaving parts of the damaged area submerged in floodwater.
Speaking during a visit to the location, several motorists said the collapse has forced drivers to slow down considerably while navigating the stretch, resulting in persistent traffic build-up, particularly during peak hours.
One motorist, Suleiman, noted that the flooding has made it difficult for road users to determine the depth of the damaged section.
“The challenge is that once it rains, the hole becomes covered with water, making it difficult for drivers to assess the extent of the damage. Everyone has to reduce speed significantly, and during rush hours, this creates heavy traffic because motorists are trying to avoid the affected portion,” he said.
Observations at the site showed vehicles moving slowly as drivers carefully manoeuvred around the damaged section to prevent damage to their vehicles.
Another road user, Gilbert Adebayo, described the condition of the road as dangerous, warning that it could expose motorists to security threats, especially at night.
“The road is becoming a trap for motorists. Visibility is poor after dark, and such conditions could create opportunities for criminal activities. It is a situation that requires urgent attention,” he said.
Similarly, a ride-hailing driver, Joseph Okonkwo, expressed fears that the damage could worsen if immediate remedial measures are not taken.
According to him, the narrowing of the road at the affected point forces vehicles into a single lane, increasing travel time and worsening congestion.
“If repairs are delayed, the damage may spread further. Continuous water flow around the collapsed section could accelerate erosion and create a much bigger problem for road users,” he stated.
The motorists appealed to the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and other relevant authorities to undertake urgent repairs to prevent further deterioration and ensure the safety of commuters.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages sent to the ministry’s spokesperson, Adesina Odunuga, were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
