LASTMA Rescues Over 200 Crash Victims, Clears 500 Road Incidents In Three Months

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disclosed that it responded to and cleared more than 500 road traffic crashes and related incidents across Lagos State during the second quarter of 2026.

The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made this known in an interview on Thursday, stating that over 200 victims were rescued through joint emergency operations carried out between April and June.

According to Bakare-Oki, the rescue efforts were undertaken in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and other emergency response agencies.

He said the coordinated operations had continued to save lives and significantly reduce fatalities on roads across the state, noting that only a minimal number of deaths were recorded during the period due to improved emergency response and stronger inter-agency collaboration.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition, especially during the rainy season. He advised drivers to maintain functional windscreen wipers, headlights, and braking systems, while carrying out regular vehicle maintenance to minimise the risk of crashes.

He also appealed to motorists to drive at reduced speeds during rainfall, avoid flood-prone routes, and exercise greater caution to protect lives and property.

The LASTMA boss further advised residents to postpone non-essential journeys during periods of heavy rainfall and flash flooding to reduce exposure to road hazards.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to improving road safety, Bakare-Oki said LASTMA, under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would continue to strengthen its emergency response capacity through regular personnel training, acquisition of modern rescue equipment, deployment of additional patrol assets, and enhanced collaboration with other emergency agencies.
