Tinubu Commends Kaduna’s Free CNG Bus Scheme, Says Programme Offers Relief To Commuters
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Kaduna State Government’s free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit programme, describing the initiative as a practical example of how state governments can use domestic energy resources to ease transportation costs for residents.
The President made the commendation in a post on his official X account on Sunday, where he specifically highlighted the deployment of 100 CNG-powered buses by the administration of Governor Uba Sani.
Tinubu noted that Kaduna’s initiative demonstrated how the transition to cheaper domestic energy could translate into tangible economic relief for ordinary citizens, particularly amid ongoing efforts to reduce transportation costs across the country.
According to the President, the programme recorded approximately 3.2 million passenger trips within its first year of operation, enabling commuters to save more than N3.5 billion in transportation expenses.
The achievement underscores the potential impact of CNG-powered public transportation in improving access to affordable mobility while reducing the financial burden on commuters.
The Kaduna State Government has maintained that it remains the only state operating a free CNG mass transit programme of this nature, positioning the initiative as a notable intervention in the state’s public transportation system.
The presidential commendation comes as the Federal Government and state governments intensify efforts to expand the adoption of CNG-powered transportation as part of broader measures to provide more affordable mobility options for Nigerians.
The expansion of CNG mass transit programmes is expected to remain a key component of ongoing efforts to leverage domestic energy resources and address the challenges associated with rising transportation costs.
