FEMD Reopens Galadimawa Slip Road To Ease Abuja Traffic

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has reopened the slip road linking the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway to Ring Road II at the Galadimawa Interchange to ease traffic congestion in Abuja.

The road was barricaded on July 7, 2026, as a precautionary measure to prevent flooding during the rainy season, when the route is usually inundated.

Speaking on Tuesday, FEMD Director, Engr. Muhammad Dikko, said the decision to reopen the road followed the end of the rainy season.

Dikko explained that the rainy season in Abuja typically begins in May, adding that the slip road experiences recurring flooding annually, necessitating its temporary closure to protect motorists and road users.

He disclosed that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and the Department of Development Control were working to address the environmental challenges responsible for the persistent flooding.

According to him, the agencies are taking proactive steps to find a lasting solution to the problem and prevent future disruptions.

Also speaking, an official of the Department of Development Control, Engr. Abdulkadir Musa, said the removal of the barricade was aimed at reducing traffic congestion along Ring Road II.

Musa noted that the reopening would allow motorists heading towards Airport Road to access the route, improving traffic flow around the interchange.

He added that the development was expected to ease congestion around ISEX/S20, also known as Oladipo Diya Way, where ongoing construction work has disrupted traffic movement.

The reopening is expected to provide relief for motorists commuting through the Galadimawa Interchange and other adjoining routes, particularly those travelling towards Airport Road.

However, the recurring flooding remains a concern, with the relevant FCT agencies working towards addressing the underlying environmental challenges responsible for the annual closure.
