ALGON Appoints Caretaker Committees For Transport Unions Amid Osun NURTW Crisis
OSOGBO – The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, has constituted caretaker management committees to oversee the affairs of transport unions across the state following the leadership crisis rocking the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The decision comes after the suspension of transport union activities in public motor parks across Osun due to violence that erupted from the leadership dispute within the NURTW.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Osun State ALGON Chairman, Mr. Samuel Idowu, said the suspension of transport union operations and the existing NURTW leadership would remain in effect pending further review.
He explained that the caretaker committees would temporarily manage the affairs of the affected unions while consultations continue with their respective national secretariats on the emergence of substantive state executives.
According to Idowu, the move followed extensive consultations with representatives of the NURTW, the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), motorcycle and tricycle unions, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
Chief Kazeem Oyewale was appointed Chairman of the NURTW caretaker committee, alongside Mutiu Ayinde as Secretary and Luqman Ahmed as Treasurer.
For the RTEAN, Rasheed Ayinde will serve as Chairman, while Mufutau Adebisi and Wahab Maruf Dodo were named Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.
The caretaker committee for the motorcycle and tricycle unions will be led by Ismaila Raimi, with Adebayo Tajudeen serving as Secretary and Tajudeen Akeem as Treasurer.
Idowu directed that all properties belonging to the affected transport unions be handed over to the newly constituted caretaker committees. He also called on security agencies to provide the necessary support to ensure a peaceful transition.
He commended the Nigeria Police Force for its swift intervention during the recent crisis, noting that the prompt response restored calm to motor parks across the state.
The ALGON chairman further appealed to transport operators, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the caretaker committees to ensure the smooth operation of motor parks across the 30 local government areas and the Ife East Area Office, Modakeke.
The caretaker committees are expected to oversee transport union activities until substantive state executives emerge through consultations with the national leadership of the respective unions.
