FRSC Unveils Safety Framework for Electric, CNG Vehicles
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has introduced a comprehensive safety, regulatory and enforcement framework to support the growing adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles across Nigeria.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, announced the initiative while delivering a paper at the 3rd Nigeria Auto Industry Summit held in Lagos. The summit, organised by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), was themed “Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Future: The EV and CNG Journey Under the Bola Tinubu Administration.”
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osundu Ohaeri, Mohammed said the framework reinforces the FRSC’s commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through safer and more sustainable transportation.
He noted that the administration’s reforms in the transport and energy sectors have accelerated the transition to cleaner, safer and more affordable mobility, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting environmental sustainability.
The Corps Marshal stressed that the success of the transition depends on strong safety regulations, technical standards, public awareness and emergency preparedness.
He explained that the FRSC has strengthened vehicle inspection procedures for CNG-powered and converted vehicles, enhanced emergency response capabilities, improved crash reporting through the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS), and intensified nationwide public enlightenment campaigns on the safe use of emerging vehicle technologies.
Mohammed said the Corps is collaborating with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive framework for the safe deployment of EVs and CNG vehicles nationwide.
He said the collaboration includes the implementation of the National Gas Vehicle Management System (NGVMS), development of standard operating procedures, coordinated vehicle inspections, emergency response protocols, dedicated EV and CNG number plates, structured data sharing and sustained public awareness campaigns.
The Corps Marshal also highlighted the functionality of the FRSC Mobile Application, describing it as a tool designed to assist motorists in adapting to Nigeria’s evolving mobility landscape.
He disclosed that the FRSC is supporting the pilot deployment of electric vehicles in Abuja while ensuring that both converted and factory-built CNG vehicles comply with approved safety standards.
Mohammed added that periodic vehicle inspections, certification of conversion centres, specialised training for emergency responders and continuous stakeholder engagement are critical to ensuring a safe and successful clean energy transition.
While highlighting the environmental and economic benefits of EVs and CNG vehicles, he urged vehicle owners, transport operators, conversion centres and industry players to comply strictly with approved safety standards, stressing that public safety remains central to Nigeria’s clean mobility agenda.
He commended President Tinubu for driving the country’s clean energy transition, describing the administration’s investment in alternative fuel transportation as a transformative policy capable of reducing transportation costs, improving energy security, creating jobs, boosting local automotive development and positioning Nigeria among leading nations embracing sustainable mobility.
Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to providing the technical leadership, regulatory oversight and operational support needed to ensure the successful implementation of the Federal Government’s clean transportation policy.
The summit brought together policymakers, regulators, automobile manufacturers, energy experts and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for advancing sustainable transportation in Nigeria.
