FAAN Commissions Upgraded Kano Airport Domestic Terminal
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commissioned the newly upgraded domestic terminal at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), marking another milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing airport modernisation programme.
The facility was inaugurated by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), on behalf of the Federal Government during a ceremony attended by the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Chairman of the FAAN Board Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, members of the National Assembly Committees on Aviation, aviation agency heads, traditional rulers, airline operators and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, FAAN Managing Director and Chief Executive, Olubunmi Kuku, described the project as a significant step toward transforming airport infrastructure and improving passenger experience nationwide.
She said the upgrade included the installation of a modern baggage handling system, improved check-in facilities, refurbished terminal interiors, enhanced passenger lounges, upgraded air-conditioning systems and other critical infrastructure designed to meet international standards.
According to Kuku, the transformation positions the Dankabo Domestic Terminal among Nigeria’s leading airport facilities, strengthening Kano’s role as Northern Nigeria’s commercial and aviation hub.
Chairman of the FAAN Board, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, commended the Ministry of Aviation and FAAN management for delivering the project, describing it as evidence of the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure renewal under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
In his remarks, Keyamo said the upgraded terminal forms part of a broader programme of airport infrastructure development being implemented in line with the ministry’s Five-Point Agenda.
He also announced that the Federal Government had approved ₦46 billion for the rehabilitation of the airport’s primary and secondary runways, revealing that about 60 per cent of the contract sum had already been released while the contractor had mobilised to site.
The minister thanked President Tinubu for supporting investments in the aviation sector, noting that sustained infrastructure development would improve operational efficiency, boost competitiveness and strengthen Nigeria’s position in global aviation.
Following the inauguration, Keyamo led dignitaries on a tour of the upgraded terminal, where guests commended FAAN for delivering a modern passenger facility with improved amenities and enhanced operational capacity.
The upgraded terminal is expected to improve passenger comfort, operational efficiency and support economic growth by reinforcing Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport’s strategic role in Nigeria’s aviation network.
