Lagos Commissions Olusosun Access Road, Deepens Waste Management Partnership
The Lagos State Government has commissioned a newly rehabilitated 1.2-kilometre access road and two engineered tipping platforms at the Olusosun Landfill in Ojota as part of efforts to improve waste evacuation and strengthen the state’s waste management infrastructure.
The project, delivered by ZoomLion Nigeria Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, is expected to enhance access for refuse trucks, reduce turnaround time for Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, and improve waste collection across Lagos following disruptions caused by weeks of heavy rainfall.
Speaking during the commissioning, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the intervention as a significant step toward modernising waste management through stronger public-private partnerships and engineering-driven solutions.
He said the collaboration expands the state’s engagement with private sector operators beyond waste collection to include technical and infrastructure development, adding that the rehabilitated road and tipping platforms would improve landfill operations and support more efficient waste evacuation.
Gbadegesin noted that the project was completed despite challenging weather conditions, commending ZoomLion Nigeria for its swift response to what he described as an emergency situation.
He also explained that Lagos continues to pursue long-term reforms in the waste management sector through investments in transfer loading stations, material recovery facilities, waste-to-energy plants, biogas projects, and other modern infrastructure designed to meet the demands of the state’s growing population.
Clarifying reports surrounding the Olusosun Landfill, Gbadegesin said the facility remains operational, noting that the state government only announced plans to gradually phase out activities there once alternative waste management facilities become fully functional.
He further disclosed that the rehabilitation was executed entirely under ZoomLion Nigeria’s CSR programme and did not require any financial contribution from the Lagos State Government.
Earlier, the Managing Director of ZoomLion Nigeria, Habiba Abubakar, said the intervention became necessary after prolonged rainfall rendered access roads to several landfill sites impassable, preventing refuse trucks from disposing of waste and slowing collection across the city.
According to her, the challenge experienced by residents stemmed largely from the inability of trucks to access dump sites rather than a failure in household waste collection.
Abubakar said ZoomLion responded to an emergency request from the Lagos State Government and LAWMA despite the assignment falling outside the company’s contractual obligations.
She explained that although the rehabilitation was initially scheduled for completion within 21 days, persistent rainfall extended the timeline to 25 days.
She expressed confidence that the upgraded infrastructure would enable refuse trucks to access landfill sites more efficiently, improve turnaround time for PSP operators, and ultimately contribute to cleaner communities across Lagos.
Project engineers disclosed that the scope of work included the reconstruction of the 1.2-kilometre Road E and the construction of two engineered tipping platforms using hard rock and laterite materials to ensure all-weather access for waste disposal vehicles.
