FERMA Raises Alarm Over Man-Made Road Damage, Faults Motorists
AYOMIDE TIWATAYO, Lagos
The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has expressed concern over the attitude of motorists and other road users towards the maintenance of federal and various other roads across the country.
Engr. Francis Isabiyi made this observation during an on-site assessment of the major structural failures along the Saki-Ago Are road.
He stated that over eighty per cent of the visible faults on the road are man-made.
Isabiyi pointed out that incidents such as diesel spills and the digging of holes have contributed significantly to the poor condition of the roads.
He urged road users to refrain from these damaging practices, emphasising the substantial resources the federal government, through its relevant agencies, invests in road maintenance.
According to him, ‘Both the road users and the residents should see the roads in their respective areas as their property because the government is spending so much on the maintenance of the roads.
“We have heard a situation where people will dig holes in the middle of the roads. This is a bad habit that need to be corrected.
“The community people should report anybody caught in this ignoble act to the relevant security agencies.
“We should all note that motorable roads play a pivotal role in the socio-economic growth of the Country.
On the rehabilitation of the major sectional failures along Saki/Ago Are road, he said, “I am satisfied with the level of work being carried out on the noticeable sectional failures along the route.
“The road serves as a link to the various agrarian communities in the area. The fixing of the bad portions will make the transportation of the farm produce to the market less cumbersome.
“It will also reduce carnage on the highway. I am, therefore, appealing to the road users to reciprocate the government gesture by ensuring proper maintenance of the roads.
Speaking in the same vein, Zonal Director, Southwest. Engr Longe Babatunde expressed his satisfaction with the work carried out on the road.
He also enjoined the road users to collaborate with the government for the proper maintenance of the road.
