FG Flags Off N1.245tn Gombe-Biu Highway Reconstruction, Awards Contract To Hi-Tech
The Federal Government has officially flagged off the reconstruction and dualisation of the 125-kilometre Gombe-Biu Highway, a major infrastructure project valued at N1.245 trillion, as part of efforts to strengthen transportation networks and stimulate economic growth in Nigeria’s North-East region.
The project was inaugurated in Gombe State on Friday by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya alongside the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who represented President Bola Tinubu.
According to a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, the highway project forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader strategy to improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and promote regional integration across the country.
The contract for the reconstruction and dualisation has been awarded to Hi-Tech Construction Company, which will execute the project using rigid pavement technology. The Federal Government said the adoption of concrete pavement is aimed at enhancing road durability, reducing maintenance requirements, and extending the lifespan of critical transport infrastructure.
The statement noted that the project is expected to boost economic activities, improve security, strengthen trade links within the North-East and neighbouring West African markets, while also reducing travel time and enhancing road safety for commuters.
“The Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has flagged off the reconstruction and dualisation of the 125km Gombe-Biu Highway, a N1.245 trillion infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity, economic growth, and regional integration,” the statement said.
The government has increasingly embraced rigid pavement technology for major federal road projects since 2023, citing its long-term cost efficiency and resilience compared to conventional asphalt roads.
Hi-Tech Construction Company has emerged as one of the leading contractors handling several flagship federal highway projects under the current administration. The company is currently executing major sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as well as Section One, Phase One of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, both of which incorporate extensive concrete pavement designs.
The contractor has also participated in other federal road interventions, including rehabilitation works on the Oworonshoki-Apapa corridor, which showcased its expertise in concrete road construction.
Meanwhile, the 2026 Appropriation Act provides funding for several strategic highway projects across the country. Among them is the Lafia-Otukpo-Makurdi dualisation project, which received approximately N23.8 billion in counterpart funding to support ongoing construction.
The Kano-Katsina dual carriageway also secured significant allocations, with N23.8 billion earmarked for Phase One and N52.5 billion for Phase Two of the 157-kilometre corridor designed to enhance trade and agricultural activities in the North-West.
Other notable projects include the Maiduguri Bypass, which received N17.5 billion for continued construction, the Wusasa-Jos Federal Road with N14 billion allocated for Phase Two rehabilitation works, and the Kano Northern Bypass, which was also allocated N14 billion to improve traffic flow and logistics within Kano metropolis.
In the South-East, the Enugu-Abakaliki Road rehabilitation project received N14.7 billion to improve connectivity and road safety, alongside several other ongoing dualisation and reconstruction projects aimed at strengthening inter-regional transportation nationwide.
