Five Killed In Multi-Vehicle Crash On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

Five people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash along the Kara section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State late Sunday night, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) has confirmed.

The crash occurred at about 11:40 p.m. on Sunday as the vehicles were travelling inbound to Lagos.

According to TRACE spokesperson, Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accident involved a white Mitsubishi mini truck with registration number JJJ-920YA, loaded with goats; a white HOWO truck with registration number BDG-332YK, conveying gas; and a white MACK truck, whose registration number was yet to be identified, transporting a blue container loaded with stones.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the HOWO truck was allegedly travelling at excessive speed when it rammed into the Mitsubishi mini truck and the MACK truck, resulting in the fatal collision.

TRACE said five male occupants were presumed dead in the crash.

The Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (OGSAES) evacuated four of the victims’ bodies to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, while efforts were ongoing to recover the fifth victim, who remained trapped inside one of the wrecked vehicles pending the arrival of a crane to lift the truck’s cabin.

Emergency responders from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), OGSAES and the Nigeria Police Force were at the scene to manage traffic, recover the victims and clear the obstruction caused by the crash.

TRACE said investigations into the incident are continuing.
