FRSC Begins Ember Months Campaign To Curb Road Crashes in Nasarawa

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nasarawa State Command, says it is set to commence its ember months road safety sensitisation campaign to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities across the state.

The Sector Commander, Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists at his office in Lafia, the state capital.

Ikeh-Akabogu said road safety was a collective responsibility that required the active participation of the government, transport operators, motorists, passengers, traditional institutions, religious leaders and the media.

He urged motorists and other road users to avoid reckless driving, overloading and unnecessary night journeys, while adhering to established safety measures on the highways.

The sector commander explained that the command had put machinery in motion to commence the ember months sensitisation campaign across Nasarawa State, noting that the initiative was designed to protect lives and property during a period when the volume of road travel was expected to increase.

According to him, the command developed a road safety blueprint upon his assumption of office to strengthen operations and improve the protection of road users, particularly during the ember months.

He stressed the importance of adequately sensitising drivers and other road users on safe driving practices, adding that the command would focus on public enlightenment, emergency response and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The FRSC commander assured residents of the state that his leadership would intensify road safety operations and deepen partnerships aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities.

He said the command’s objective was not to increase the number of motorists arrested, but to prevent crashes, minimise fatalities and improve the chances of road users reaching their destinations safely.

Ikeh-Akabogu further advised motorists to avoid excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, fatigue driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, overloading and the use of mobile phones while driving.

He also urged drivers to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on journeys, stressing the need for compliance with safety regulations.

The sector commander appealed to commercial transport operators to prioritise the safety of their passengers above the pressure to maximise profits.

He disclosed that the sensitisation campaign would extend beyond motor parks to worship centres across the state, in a bid to reach a wider segment of the population.

Ikeh-Akabogu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to discharging its responsibilities with professionalism, fairness and transparency, while working with stakeholders to promote safer roads and protect lives and property in Nasarawa State.
