FRSC Sets Up Steering Committee To Improve Road Safety Infrastructure Nationwide

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has inaugurated the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) Steering Committee as part of efforts to enhance road infrastructure safety and reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.

The committee, inaugurated at the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja, is expected to provide strategic direction, coordination, and leadership for the successful implementation of the NigeriaRAP initiative.

Speaking at the event, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Muhammad, described the development as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to build safer roads and meet global road safety targets.

He stressed that road traffic crashes remain a significant public health and development challenge, noting that proactive assessment and improvement of road infrastructure are essential to protecting motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

The NigeriaRAP initiative was established by the FRSC in partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to assess road safety conditions, identify high-risk locations, and implement measures aimed at improving protection for vulnerable road users.

The programme is built around three key pillars: strengthening local partnerships, promoting international collaboration, and achieving a minimum Three-Star Road Safety Rating and above on Nigerian roads.

Muhammad recalled that efforts to institutionalise the programme began with the inauguration of the Stakeholders Committee in February 2021, followed by the signing of a National Licence Agreement between the FRSC and iRAP on November 18, 2025, which formally introduced NigeriaRAP.

Members of the Steering Committee include representatives from the Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), KRSD Foundation, Green Light Initiative, and other relevant stakeholders.

The Corps Marshal charged members of the committee to remain committed and proactive in delivering the objectives of the programme, expressing confidence that sustained collaboration and investment in safer road infrastructure would contribute significantly to reducing road crashes and fatalities.

He added that the initiative would support the creation of a safer and more efficient road transport system for Nigerians.
