FRSC Strengthens Nationwide Regulation Of Okada, Tricycle Operations

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified efforts to regulate commercial motorcycles (okada) and tricycles (keke) across Nigeria in a bid to improve road safety and address security concerns.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this on Sunday in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He explained that the FRSC, as the lead agency for road safety administration, has adopted a structured and collaborative approach by working closely with rider unions and their leadership to ensure proper registration, identification and accountability of operators.

According to him, the corps has also developed training programmes aimed at educating riders on traffic regulations, safety standards and responsible road use. He noted that such initiatives are designed to instil discipline and promote compliance with designated operational routes.

“At times, these operators can pose security challenges, but with proper regulation and identification, they can be traced through their leaders to ensure orderliness,” he said.

Mr Ohaeri added that FRSC patrol teams actively monitor compliance with traffic rules and approved routes, stressing that violators are sanctioned in accordance with existing laws.

He further stated that the agency supports initiatives encouraging rider identification and the use of safety gear, including helmets and protective jackets, to reduce the risk of injuries.

The FRSC spokesperson noted that ongoing collaboration between the corps and rider unions has helped to strengthen regulation, improve safety standards and foster a sense of responsibility among operators nationwide.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining training, enforcement and stakeholder partnerships to enhance road safety and minimise risks associated with commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations in the country.
