Kaduna Engages Traditional Institutions On BRT, Transport Reforms

The Kaduna State Government has intensified consultations with traditional institutions as part of efforts to implement its proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and broader urban transport reforms.

The engagement, led by the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), took place at the Zazzau Emir’s Palace in Zaria, where key stakeholders discussed the Kaduna Connect BRT Project and other planned initiatives.

Speaking during the meeting, KADSTRA Director General, Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, described the BRT project as a strategic intervention aimed at improving urban mobility, boosting economic productivity, and addressing transportation challenges across the state. He noted that the initiative aligns with Governor Uba Sani’s agenda to promote inclusive, affordable, and well-regulated transport systems.

According to Ibrahim, the Kaduna Connect BRT Project is expected to become the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria and the second in the country, highlighting its importance in positioning Kaduna as a major transport hub.

He added that the project is being developed with support from international consultants under structured technical and project management frameworks. He also stressed the need for the support of traditional institutions in mobilising grassroots acceptance and ensuring successful implementation.

Beyond the BRT system, the state government is considering additional transport projects, including light rail corridors spanning about 30 kilometres from Maraban Rido to Rigachikum and 20 kilometres from Rigasa to Millennium City. Plans are also underway for a monorail system linking Gwargwaje, Kofar Doka, and Shika town in Giwa Local Government Area.

In his remarks, the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, commended the government’s efforts to improve the transport sector, citing initiatives such as subsidised transport services and infrastructure development like the Kakuri Bus Terminal.

The Emir expressed optimism that the ongoing reforms would restore Kaduna’s reputation for an efficient transport system. He, however, emphasised the need for sustainability in the Kaduna Subsidised Transport Scheme to ensure continued relief for residents, especially amid economic challenges.

He also called for stronger regulation of commercial transport operators to enhance safety and reduce accidents, while endorsing rail-based transport systems as safe and efficient alternatives for urban mobility.
