Giwa Commends Lagosians, LASTMA Officers Over Orderly Traffic During Detty December Operations

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, has commended residents of Lagos for their high level of civic responsibility and compliance with traffic regulations during the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s (LASTMA) 24-hour Night Gang Operations carried out across the metropolis during the 2025 “Detty December” festive season.

Giwa gave the commendation at the weekend while hosting officers and men of LASTMA at a New Year White Party and Recognition of Meritorious Service organised in honour of the agency’s personnel.

He praised Lagosians and the motoring public for their cooperation and discipline, noting that their conduct played a crucial role in ensuring smooth traffic flow, improved safety and operational efficiency during the typically busy festive period.

According to him, the 2025 Detty December season, usually characterised by heavy traffic congestion, increased night-time social activities and high road usage, stood out for the unprecedented level of voluntary adherence to traffic rules by motorists and commuters.

He said this facilitated seamless traffic management across major corridors, including Ikoyi, Victoria Island and the Lekki–Ajah axis, even during late-night hours.

“The outcomes recorded during the LASTMA 24-hour Night Gang Operations are clear evidence of the growing traffic awareness and civic maturity of Lagosians. The patience and law-abiding conduct displayed by road users deserve public commendation,” Giwa said.

The Special Adviser also acknowledged the support of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, attributing the improved performance of LASTMA to the governor’s consistent investments in infrastructure, logistics, personnel welfare and capacity building within the transportation sector.

He stated that the administration’s support has strengthened the agency’s professionalism and positioned it as a more responsive and reform-driven traffic management institution.

Looking ahead, Giwa disclosed that LASTMA is set to transition from conventional traffic control to a technology-driven incident management system in 2026.

He explained that the initiative would involve the deployment of real-time surveillance tools, rapid-response mechanisms and data-driven operational models aimed at reducing road incidents, shortening response times and enhancing overall road safety.

“In the new year, LASTMA will go beyond routine traffic regulation to proactively manage road incidents through the use of technology, ensuring safer and more efficient roads across Lagos,” he said.

Giwa urged residents to sustain the culture of compliance, patience and mutual respect on the roads, stressing that effective traffic management requires collective responsibility between government agencies and the public.

The event also served as a morale-boosting platform to recognise the dedication and sacrifices of LASTMA personnel, with outstanding officers rewarded for their exemplary service.

Top government officials and key stakeholders in the transportation sector were in attendance.
