In a continued effort to have safer roads and empower young Nigerians, GreenLight Initiative, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has inaugurated 12 Road Safety Clubs in selected schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos, and Rivers State.

This initiative stems from the commitment made by the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) during the National Finals of the 2025 VIA Programme for Safe Mobility held in Lagos, where he pledged to work with GreenLight Initiative to establish Road Safety Clubs in 19 of the 30 participating schools that previously had none, a move aimed at sustaining the impact of the VIA Programme and the strengthening of road safety education among young people.

According to Greenlight, the primary goal of the Road Safety Clubs is to nurture a generation of road safety–conscious young individuals who will become advocates for promoting road traffic safety awareness within their schools, expected to also have ripple effects in enhancing safety across communities.

The inauguration of these clubs marks another significant milestone in the implementation of the VIA Programme for Safe Mobility, a global initiative of the TotalEnergies Foundation, supported by TotalEnergies Nigeria and NNPC, and implemented in Nigeria by GreenLight Initiative.

Through the VIA Programme, over 600 students from 30 public secondary schools participated in classroom learning, risk mapping, and creative sessions promoting safer mobility for young people. The newly inaugurated Road Safety Clubs will serve as lasting platforms for these students to champion safety awareness, lead peer education activities, and engage their school communities in promoting responsible road use.

During the inauguration events, FRSC representatives commended the enthusiasm of participating schools and reaffirmed the Corps’ dedication to continuous safety education among youth, stressing that the clubs will help nurture a generation of informed, safety-conscious citizens who contribute to safer roads across Nigeria.

The VIA Programme for Safe Mobility aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 4, 11, and 17) promoting good health and well-being, quality education, and sustainable, inclusive mobility systems. The establishment of these Road Safety Clubs reflects the enduring social impact of the VIA Programme and its role in empowering young Nigerians to lead change for safer journeys in their communities.
