GreenLight Initiative Joins UN High-Level Meeting To Advance Global Road Safety

GreenLight Initiative (GLI) participated in the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety, held from 20–21 July 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The meeting brought together Heads of State and Government, ministers, United Nations agencies, civil society organisations, researchers, youth leaders and development partners to strengthen global commitments towards halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030, while advancing safer and more sustainable mobility for all.
GreenLight Initiative’s participation reaffirmed its commitment to bringing Nigerian and African perspectives to global road safety discussions, while learning from international best practices that can help build safer roads and communities.
Road traffic crashes remain one of the world’s leading causes of preventable deaths, with low- and middle-income countries bearing a disproportionate share of the burden. In Nigeria, the need for stronger collaboration, sustained investment and evidence-based interventions has never been greater.
Over the years, GreenLight Initiative has worked with government institutions, development partners, schools, communities, the media and young people to promote road safety through advocacy, public education, research, stakeholder engagement and community-based initiatives. The organisation believes that protecting lives on the roads requires collective action and a shared commitment to creating safer transport systems for everyone.
Speaking after the meeting, Founder and Director of GreenLight Initiative, Simon Patrick Obi, said:
“Road safety is about people. Every life lost on our roads is one too many, and every preventable crash reminds us that we must do more. As we joined this important global conversation, we looked forward to sharing our experiences from Nigeria, learning from others, and strengthening partnerships that will help create safer roads and save lives.”
During the meeting, GreenLight Initiative engaged with global stakeholders, exchanged knowledge and experiences, and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing policies and initiatives that improve road safety, protect vulnerable road users and promote safe, inclusive mobility.
As the global community works towards achieving the objectives of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, GreenLight Initiative acknowledged the leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, mni, in strengthening road safety in Nigeria through strategic partnerships.
The organisation also called on government agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, the private sector and well-meaning Nigerians to deepen collaboration in accelerating actions that will make safer roads a reality for all.
