Jigawa Police Launch ‘Operation Velvet’ To Enforce Traffic Laws

The Jigawa State Police Command has announced the commencement of a statewide traffic enforcement operation aimed at curbing road traffic violations and reducing avoidable accidents across the state.

The operation, code-named “Operation Velvet,” is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 24, 2026, and will be conducted simultaneously across the 27 local government areas of Jigawa State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawal Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to the statement, the operation will be carried out in collaboration with relevant security and traffic management agencies, with joint enforcement teams deployed to major roads, highways, urban centres, markets, motor parks and other traffic-prone areas.

The command said the exercise was designed to ensure compliance with traffic regulations while protecting the lives and property of motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

It said enforcement teams would intensify patrols, stop-and-search operations and targeted checks to identify and prosecute traffic offenders.

Among the violations targeted are passenger, goods and animal overloading; dangerous and reckless driving; driving against traffic; driving without number plates or valid documents; use of unroadworthy vehicles; and illegal parking.

Other offences include obstruction of traffic, disobedience to traffic signs and signals, dangerous use of vehicles and unauthorised use of tinted glass.

The command also announced plans to establish a mobile court to ensure the swift handling of traffic-related cases. Motorists arrested for offences will be processed in line with the law and prosecuted before the mobile court where necessary.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, directed officers involved in the operation to conduct themselves professionally and fairly while respecting the fundamental rights of citizens.

He warned personnel against extortion, corruption, abuse of power and other forms of unprofessional conduct during the exercise.

The police commissioner urged commercial drivers, motorcycle and tricycle operators, transport unions, private motorists and other road users to cooperate with the enforcement teams.

He also advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy and that all relevant documents were valid before embarking on journeys.
