Kwara Traffic Agency Sacks Officer, Demotes Two Over Extortion

The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority has dismissed one of its personnel and demoted two others over alleged extortion of motorists during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Ilorin.

The sanctions followed an investigation into a viral video showing three KWARTMA personnel allegedly engaging in unethical conduct at the Geri Alimi Roundabout during the sanitation exercise on June 27, 2026.

The Head of Media and Public Relations of KWARTMA, Olawuyi Olalekan, disclosed the disciplinary action in a statement issued on Monday.

According to the statement, the video attracted public concern and prompted the authority’s management to investigate the conduct of the officers involved.

The Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Abdullahi Oba, said the conduct captured in the video was contrary to the authority’s values, operational standards and official policies.

He reaffirmed KWARTMA’s zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, bribery, corruption and other forms of misconduct.

The three personnel were reportedly summoned before the Provost Department for interrogation and investigation before appearing before the Senior Staff Management Committee to respond to the allegations.

Following the disciplinary proceedings, the three officers were found culpable and sanctioned in accordance with public service rules, with the sanctions taking effect from July 9, 2026.

Oba described the dismissal of one of the personnel as a landmark disciplinary action in the history of the authority, stressing that it demonstrated the seriousness with which KWARTMA viewed corruption and extortion.

He warned that any personnel found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures, adding that there would be no sacred cows in the authority’s efforts to promote discipline, integrity and professionalism.

Oba also urged KWARTMA personnel to maintain high standards of professionalism, accountability and discipline while carrying out their duties.

The authority assured residents that its personnel would continue to perform their responsibilities professionally and responsibly, while operating within the law and approved procedures.

KWARTMA said the disciplinary action formed part of its commitment to transparency, accountability and due process in addressing cases of misconduct.

The authority reiterated that its mandate includes promoting road safety, protecting lives and property, ensuring orderly traffic management and providing quality service to residents of Kwara State.
