Land Rover Catches Fire After Overturning On Third Mainland Bridge
A Land Rover Jeep caught fire after overturning on the Third Mainland Bridge inward to Iyana-Oworo in Lagos, following an alleged loss of steering control.
The incident, which caused severe traffic congestion along the busy highway, recorded no fatalities, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed in a statement that LASEMA received a distress call about the incident at approximately 1:06 p.m. on Friday.
He said the agency immediately deployed its Tiger Squad from the Command-and-Control Centre in Alausa to the scene, where responders arrived at about 1:30 p.m.
According to him, the team discovered that the vehicle, with registration number EPE-743JM, had been engulfed in flames following the crash.
The emergency responders promptly commenced firefighting operations, successfully containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to nearby areas.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force.
He explained that the agencies implemented traffic management measures to safeguard motorists and other road users while preventing secondary accidents.
Following the successful firefighting operation, the burnt vehicle was evacuated from the carriageway with the assistance of a private Hiab truck, enabling traffic to flow freely along the affected section of the bridge.
LASEMA urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition, exercise caution while driving and comply with traffic regulations to minimise road crashes and other emergencies.
