LASEMA Clears Fallen Container Truck, Reopens Lagos Road

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has cleared a container-laden truck that tilted and obstructed approximately 80 per cent of the roadway at National-Ashade, Lagos, restoring normal vehicular movement in the area.

The incident occurred at about 11:21 p.m. on Sunday when a MACK truck carrying two 20-foot containers reportedly broke down while attempting to make a U-turn.

In a statement issued on Monday, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency’s Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa was activated following reports of the incident and promptly mobilised to the scene.

According to the agency, preliminary investigations revealed that a tyre burst caused the truck to tilt, creating a significant hazard for motorists and obstructing most of the roadway.

Upon arrival, emergency responders implemented traffic diversion measures and secured the area to prevent further incidents while awaiting the arrival of heavy-duty recovery equipment.

LASEMA said the recovery operation was carried out through a coordinated effort involving a private crane, two forklifts, the agency’s lowbed and a private tow truck.

The two containers were successfully recovered and loaded onto the agency’s lowbed, while the MACK truck was towed to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) yard in Oshodi.

The agency confirmed that the road had been fully cleared and reopened to traffic following the successful operation.

It added that no fatalities or injuries were recorded in connection with the incident.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended LASEMA’s Cobra and Eagle Response Teams, alongside other collaborating agencies, for their swift response and effective coordination during the recovery operation.

He also urged drivers of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations, and exercise caution while navigating Lagos roads.

The LASEMA Permanent Secretary further encouraged residents to report emergencies promptly through the agency’s toll-free emergency lines, 767 and 112, to facilitate timely intervention.
