PTCS, VIS, LASTMA Collaborates To Strengthen Transport Safety Enforcement
OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
The Lagos State Government has launched a renewed enforcement initiative aimed at improving safety, accountability and regulatory compliance across the state’s commercial transport sector through a collaborative effort involving the Directorate of Public Transport and Commuter Services (PTCS), the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The initiative, unveiled by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, is designed to enhance commuter safety and security while ensuring strict adherence to transportation regulations by commercial transport operators.
Speaking on the initiative, the Director of Public Transport and Commuter Services, Mr. Nuhman Edu, said the framework establishes a coordinated operational partnership among PTCS, VIS and LASTMA to address critical compliance gaps in the sector.
According to Edu, the agencies will focus on enforcing mandatory requirements, including proper registration of commercial vehicles, vehicle body tags, stage carriage permits, drivers’ badges and conductors’ badges.
He explained that the collaboration would strengthen verification of safety documents during routine enforcement exercises, noting that operators found to be in violation of existing regulations would be subjected to appropriate enforcement measures in line with extant laws, approved guidelines and established operational procedures.
Edu said the initiative would improve the identification and traceability of commercial vehicles and drivers, thereby enhancing accountability among transport operators, supporting investigations involving vehicles used in criminal activities and facilitating the prompt resolution of commuter complaints.
He disclosed that the operational framework clearly defines the responsibilities of the participating agencies across six key areas, including verification of PTCS documentation, recording vehicle compliance status, identification of non-compliance cases, initiation of enforcement or corrective actions, information sharing among agencies and referral of cases requiring further regulatory or administrative action.
The PTCS Director stressed that commuter safety and security remain the primary objectives of regulating public transportation in Lagos State.
He added that the Ministry would engage transport unions and associations through stakeholder meetings, media campaigns and public sensitisation programmes to ensure operators understand the objectives, requirements and procedures of the new compliance initiative.
Edu further revealed that the Ministry has adopted a continuous monitoring and evaluation system to assess compliance levels across the state, supported by a structured reporting and feedback mechanism to identify compliance gaps and address emerging issues promptly.
The Ministry said the renewed collaboration among PTCS, VIS and LASTMA reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening transport safety, improving regulatory enforcement and providing a safer commuting environment for residents.
