Sanwo-Olu Promises Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge Will Open Before Christmas

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured residents that the Opebi-Ojota link bridge will be ready for public use before Christmas, following delays that pushed its completion beyond the previously announced September deadline.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance on Sunday during an inspection visit to the project site, where he assessed the progress of work and sought explanations for the delay in opening the bridge.

The governor had earlier indicated that the bridge would be available for use by the end of September, but the deadline passed without the completion of the necessary works.

He said the inspection was necessary to establish the reasons for the delay and ensure that the project was completed within the new timeframe.

“This is the end of October, and we haven’t completed it. So, as a responsible governor, I have to come and find out: what is the delay?” Sanwo-Olu said.

Explaining the architectural concept behind the project, the governor said the bridge was designed to reflect the historical and cultural identity of the area, particularly its association with the traditional cane market.

According to him, the design incorporates an elaborate steel structure inspired by the weaving of canes, an approach intended to preserve the area’s heritage while delivering modern infrastructure.

He noted that the location, historically known as Odo-iya Alaro, holds cultural significance, adding that the project was conceived to ensure that the area’s history and traditions remain visible amid urban development.

Sanwo-Olu described the project as an engineering innovation, explaining that its construction involves installing more than 300 tonnes of steel at heights of up to 25 metres.

He said the structure comprises four major components, three of which had been completed, while work was ongoing on the fourth section.

The governor expressed optimism that the remaining structural work would be completed within a few more days, paving the way for the final stages of the project.

He added that an LED screen would be installed on the bridge, incorporating the colours of Lagos State to enhance its appearance and establish it as a distinctive landmark.

Sanwo-Olu said the bridge was approximately 80 per cent complete, expressing confidence that its completion would provide Lagos with another notable piece of infrastructure.

The Opebi-Ojota link bridge is expected to improve connectivity in the area and support movement between adjoining parts of Lagos, while its distinctive architectural features are intended to give it additional aesthetic and cultural value.
