Three Killed As Truck Runs Into Commuters At Tollgate Ota

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

A fatal road traffic accident occurred on Tuesday night at the Ota Tollgate along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, resulting in the death of three commuters.

The crash, which happened at about 9:05 p.m., involved a Scania truck loaded with plywood (registration number GGE 681 XD) and an empty truck with registration number SMK 795 YF.

According to eyewitness accounts, the loaded truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into the vehicle ahead of it.

In the process, the out-of-control truck struck commuters who were standing at the tollgate bus stop waiting to board a bus. Three people—two males and one female—were confirmed dead at the scene. No injuries were recorded among other occupants.

Rescue and emergency response teams from the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the Police (Papa Oscar), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to manage the situation.

The affected vehicles were subsequently towed to the Papa Oscar yard for further investigation, while the remains of the deceased were evacuated to the Ifo Mortuary.

Traffic flow along the expressway, particularly inbound Lagos, was initially disrupted by the incident. However, with the intervention of TRACE operatives and other responders, the obstruction was cleared and normal vehicular movement was restored.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Commander of TRACE in Ota, Salau H.O., said investigations had commenced to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
