Tinubu’s Increased Funding Boosts Federal Road Maintenance — FERMA
The Federal Road Maintenance Agency has said increased funding under the President Bola Tinubu administration has enabled it to intensify the rehabilitation and maintenance of federal roads across the country.
FERMA also commended the President for the funding support, saying it had strengthened the agency’s capacity to intervene in critical road corridors and improve their condition.
The Special Assistant to the Managing Director of FERMA, Engr. Emeka Maduagwu, disclosed this during a management monitoring tour of road projects in Akwa Ibom State.
The monitoring team inspected ongoing and completed road projects across the South-South region, including the Ekparakwa-Azumini Road, Ete-Abak Road and Abak-Ekparakwa-Mkpat-East West Road.
On the Ekparakwa-Azumini Road, Maduagwu noted that sections previously affected by potholes and failed portions had been rehabilitated under FERMA’s SUKUK-funded intervention programme.
He said the development demonstrated the impact of increased funding on federal road maintenance.
According to him, the additional funding had provided FERMA with greater capacity to undertake more rehabilitation and maintenance projects nationwide.
He stressed that the agency’s responsibility extended beyond intervening on damaged roads to ensuring that projects were properly executed and that Nigerians received value for the resources committed to them.
The team also inspected the Ete-Abak Road, another project being implemented under the SUKUK intervention programme, as well as maintenance works along the Abak-Ekparakwa-Mkpat-East West Road.
The interventions included the treatment of failed road sections, removal of unsuitable materials, provision of stone base and drainage infrastructure, asphaltic overlays and carriageway repairs.
Maduagwu said the monitoring exercise was aimed at assessing the quality and progress of the projects and ensuring that they met required standards.
He emphasised the need for roads to be safe, durable and beneficial to road users.
The FERMA official further stressed that sustained funding was essential to preserving the nation’s road network and preventing premature deterioration.
He expressed appreciation to the President for the increased attention to road infrastructure, adding that continued funding would enable FERMA to intervene in more critical locations.
The FERMA engineer in Akwa Ibom State, Solomon Eluma, also provided details on the scope of the interventions carried out on the affected roads.
The agency said the monitoring tour formed part of its efforts to assess ongoing projects, inspect completed works and ensure that government investments in road infrastructure were effectively utilised.
Maduagwu reiterated FERMA’s commitment to prioritising road maintenance, noting that functional roads remained essential to the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services across the country.
