The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, has honoured Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West) with its prestigious Fellowship of the College (FYCT) during the institution’s 37th Convocation Ceremony held over the weekend.
The recognition adds to Senator Adeola’s growing list of academic honours, recalling that he was previously conferred with the Fellow of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (FFPI) by the Ogun State–based institution.
Presenting the award on behalf of the College, Rector of YABATECH, Dr. (Engr.) Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, stated that the fellowship was in recognition of the senator’s “remarkable contributions to the growth of education and national development.” He noted that Senator Adeola had consistently supported YABATECH’s long-standing aspiration to attain university status, a commitment the institution deeply values.
Receiving the award through his representative, Hon. Bolaji Oyeleye, Senator Adeola expressed gratitude for the honour, describing education as a fundamental pillar for national progress and personal advancement. He restated his commitment to supporting educational development at all levels.
“I am very happy with this award from the prestigious YABATECH. As a senator, I have made sustained efforts to upgrade the College to a University of Technology in view of its capacity and historical impact on technology education,” he said.
He recalled sponsoring the bill for the upgrade during the 8th Senate (2015–2019), where it passed first and second readings before the session ended, and re-sponsoring it in the 9th Senate (2019–2023), during which the Senate passed the bill but it failed to secure House concurrence before the session expired.
Adeola, who currently chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations, commended Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele for reintroducing the bill in the 10th Senate, leading to its successful passage by the National Assembly and subsequent presidential assent. He emphasized that the transition of YABATECH into a University of Technology would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s technological manpower base.
The senator extended appreciation to the Rector, Governing Council, staff, and students of the institution for the honour, pledging to continue supporting educational advancement through legislative action, infrastructural interventions, scholarships, and bursary awards.
The fellowship insignia was presented by Hon. Oyeleye in the presence of the senator’s wife, Chief (Mrs.) Temitope Adeola, alongside friends, supporters, and well-wishers.
