Yuletide: Ogun Government Warns Street Traders Against Occupying Walkways, Road Setbacks

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

The Ogun State Government has cautioned traders, artisans, vendors and motor dealers against the illegal occupation of pedestrian walkways and road setbacks during the forthcoming Yuletide season and afterwards.

The warning was issued at the weekend by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Abeokuta. The highest ranking officer on duty, Commander Elias Omonayajo, said the government would not tolerate activities that obstruct smooth traffic flow or endanger pedestrians.

Omonayajo, who condemned the conversion of sidewalks and road edges into trading hubs, described the practice as unlawful and detrimental to road safety and public convenience. He said such activities often cause traffic gridlock, accidents and discomfort for commuters and shoppers, particularly during festive periods.

He identified some of the areas where the practice is widespread to include Panseke, Kuto, Oke-Ilewo, Ijaiye, Sango-Ota, Iju-Atan, Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, among others.

The TRACE commander advised all traders and operators currently occupying these spaces to relocate to approved markets immediately. He warned that defaulters risk penalties, including fines and possible court prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government commended TRACE for its continuous efforts in improving public order and road safety across the state. It also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening infrastructure and ensuring the free movement of people and vehicles as Ogun remains a major gateway to other parts of the country.
