69 Killed, 246 Injured In Lagos Road Accidents In Q1 2026 — LASTMA
No fewer than 69 persons lost their lives in road accidents across Lagos State in the first quarter of 2026, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disclosed.
The agency also reported that 246 others sustained varying degrees of injuries within the same period.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.
Bakare-Oki stated that the authority responded to and cleared over 600 accident scenes between January and March, as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and emergency response across the state.
He further revealed that LASTMA handled more than 900 traffic infractions involving trucks and articulated vehicles, while carrying out about 4,900 physical enforcement operations during the period under review.
According to him, the agency also recorded 17,942 traffic offences through technology-driven enforcement systems, including the use of Traffic Management Solutions devices.
The LASTMA boss reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on traffic violations, noting that impounded vehicles would be promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court.
He said the agency had undertaken a comprehensive overhaul of its traffic management equipment and recovery vehicles, strategically repositioning them to enhance response time to road incidents and reduce travel time for residents.
Bakare-Oki added that LASTMA had prioritised personnel development, commencing training and re-orientation programmes aimed at improving service delivery.
He disclosed that the agency plans to train over 1,000 personnel in 2026 through both internal and external capacity-building programmes, supported by professional consultants.
He said the training would be implemented through a structured, year-long calendar designed to enhance operational efficiency and professionalism within the agency.
