BRT Bus Catches Fire On Ikorodu Road, Passengers Injured In Rush To Escape

Several passengers were injured on Wednesday morning after a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle caught fire while in motion along Ikorodu Road in Lagos.

The incident occurred inward Majidun at about 6:30 a.m., prompting commuters onboard the bus to scramble for safety as flames reportedly erupted from the engine compartment.

Eyewitnesses said the bus was travelling on the designated BRT lane when the fire suddenly broke out, causing panic among passengers.

A witness, Shade Jimoh, described the moment as frightening, noting that passengers immediately began shouting and rushing toward the exit.
“It felt like something out of a horror movie. The bus was moving when flames suddenly started coming out from the engine area. People were shouting and trying to escape,” she said.

While no fatalities were recorded, some commuters sustained injuries during the rush to exit the vehicle, with a few reportedly trapped briefly during the evacuation.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, stating that firefighters received a distress call at about 6:48 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 7:01 a.m.

According to the agency’s spokesperson, Shakiru Amodu, the fire occurred near the Majidun Boma filling station and was quickly brought under control by emergency responders.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, although initial observations suggest a possible mechanical fault.

The incident has renewed concerns among commuters about the safety of public transport operations in Lagos.
