LASWA Intensifies Safety Checks At Lagos Ferry Terminals, Seizes 120 Defective Life Jackets
OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has intensified safety inspections across major ferry terminals and jetties in Lagos State as part of efforts to enforce compliance with waterways safety regulations and improve operational standards.
The inspection exercise covered several terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex and Coconut, with officials focusing primarily on boat seaworthiness and life jacket safety compliance.
During the operation, LASWA confiscated and removed 120 damaged life jackets from circulation, describing the action as necessary to eliminate safety risks and ensure adherence to established waterways standards.
According to the Authority, the inspections revealed varying levels of compliance among boat operators. While a number of vessels were found to have met required safety standards, some operators were directed to carry out repairs and maintenance to achieve full seaworthiness.
LASWA stressed that compliance with safety protocols, particularly regarding vessel conditions and the use of certified life jackets, remains mandatory for all operators on the state’s waterways.
The Authority further stated that enforcement activities would continue across ferry terminals and jetties to ensure strict observance of safety regulations.
It added that operators are legally required to maintain seaworthy boats and provide passengers with functional and approved life jackets at all times.
Reaffirming its commitment to safer water transportation, LASWA said it would continue to strengthen regulatory oversight in line with efforts to build a reliable and well-regulated waterways transport system in Lagos State.
The agency also urged members of the public and water transport operators to cooperate with safety officials and comply with all waterways regulations to prevent accidents and safeguard lives.
