Yuletide: Ekiti Police Intensify Traffic Enforcement Over Rising Road Accidents

The Ekiti State Police Command has announced plans to intensify traffic patrols and enforcement of road safety regulations ahead of the Yuletide season, following concerns over the increasing number of road accidents resulting in deaths and injuries across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu.

Falade said the command would strengthen visibility policing and traffic enforcement in collaboration with relevant traffic management agencies to curb reckless driving and reduce road crashes, particularly in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

He noted that the festive season typically witnesses increased vehicular movement and commercial activities, making strict compliance with traffic regulations essential to protecting lives and property.

The police commissioner urged motorists and other road users to prioritise safety, warning against speeding, reckless overtaking, dangerous manoeuvres and driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

He also advised drivers and motorcycle riders to ensure they possess valid driving licences, maintain roadworthy vehicles, avoid overloading and distractions, and use appropriate safety equipment, including seat belts and approved crash helmets.

Falade further called on road users to obey traffic signs and signals, exercise patience, remain vigilant and show consideration for pedestrians and other motorists.

According to him, the increasing number of reported road accidents has been linked to reckless and unqualified driving, excessive speeding, impatience, disregard for traffic regulations and disobedience to traffic lights.

He warned that such practices endanger the lives of motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

“The Command will intensify traffic patrols, visibility policing, and enforcement of relevant traffic laws in collaboration with appropriate traffic management agencies. Any person found violating applicable traffic regulations will be made to face the full weight of the law,” the commissioner stated.

The command also urged motorists, motorcycle riders, tricycle operators and other road users to demonstrate greater caution and responsibility, particularly as traffic increases during the festive period.

Falade encouraged members of the public to promptly report traffic violations, emergencies and other activities that threaten public safety to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency contact number, 08062335577.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring safer roads for residents and visitors throughout the Yuletide season and beyond.
