Enugu Police Order Arrest, Prosecution Of Traffic Offenders

The Enugu State Police Command has directed the immediate enforcement of traffic laws across the state, ordering the arrest and prosecution of motorists who violate existing traffic regulations.

The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, following growing disregard for traffic rules, which the command said had contributed to gridlock, road crashes, loss of lives and destruction of property.

The move is also in line with a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for nationwide enforcement of traffic laws to restore order and improve safety on Nigerian roads.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Giwa directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the command’s Legal Officer and the State Traffic Officer to ensure that the enforcement is carried out professionally and in accordance with the law.

The officers were also tasked with ensuring that traffic offenders are arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws and regulations.

Giwa, however, cautioned police officers involved in the exercise against violating the rights and dignity of motorists and other road users.

He urged all motorists, including police officers and other security personnel, to familiarise themselves with traffic regulations and comply with them to avoid arrest and prosecution.

The commissioner said strict adherence to traffic laws was necessary to reduce congestion, prevent road crashes and ensure the free flow of traffic across the state.

The command said the enforcement would cover all existing traffic laws and regulations applicable to motorists throughout Enugu State.
