Rivers Police To Enforce Traffic Laws From August 17

The Rivers State Police Command will commence strict enforcement of traffic laws across the state on August 17, 2026, as part of efforts to improve road safety and ease traffic congestion.

The enforcement will be carried out under Operation Velvet, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

The command, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, said the operation was prompted by increasing disregard for traffic regulations, which has contributed to gridlocks, obstruction of traffic and avoidable risks to road users.

The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

According to the command, motorists and other road users who violate traffic laws may face arrest, vehicle impoundment and prosecution where necessary.

Adepoju, however, warned police officers participating in the enforcement exercise against extortion, harassment, intimidation, brutality and abuse of office.
He said officers found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

The command urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with officers deployed for the exercise.

It said the enforcement was aimed at promoting safer roads, reducing traffic violations and ensuring smoother movement of vehicles across Rivers State.
