FAAN Launches Waste Recycling Programme At Lagos Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched the first phase of its Sustainable Waste Management Programme at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, with the introduction of colour-coded recycling bins to promote proper waste separation and environmental sustainability.

The initiative, unveiled on Thursday, is aimed at improving waste management practices and creating cleaner, greener and more sustainable airport environments across Nigeria.

The launch was led by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), alongside the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku.

According to FAAN, the colour-coded recycling bins are designed to simplify waste sorting for passengers, airport users and other stakeholders, while encouraging responsible disposal and increased recycling.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the authority described the programme as a major milestone in its commitment to sustainable airport operations.

FAAN urged travellers and airport users to support the initiative by disposing of waste in the appropriate recycling bins, noting that collective action is essential to maintaining cleaner airport facilities and protecting the environment.

The authority added that the waste management programme forms part of broader efforts to enhance environmental sustainability across Nigeria’s airports.
