FAAN Plans 25-Day Runway Closure At Owerri Airport For Repairs
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for about 25 days to allow for essential repairs and resurfacing works.
The closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation, according to a statement issued by the authority on Thursday.
FAAN said the planned closure became necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks, which have been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
The rehabilitation project will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to improve the runway’s condition and ensure safer airport operations.
The authority explained that the intervention was also intended to prepare the airport for the anticipated increase in passenger numbers and flight operations during the Christmas season.
In addition to the rehabilitation works, FAAN disclosed that the project would include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region continues to grow.
The planned expansion is expected to enhance the airport’s operational capacity, improve passenger comfort and facilitate a more seamless travel experience for users.
FAAN advised passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and information on alternative travel arrangements.
The authority added that it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and communicate the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.
FAAN appealed to airport users and other stakeholders to cooperate with the authority during the maintenance exercise, expressing appreciation for their understanding as the necessary improvements are carried out.
