Fatal Crash Claims Driver on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway as LASTMA, Police Launch Investigation

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

A lone vehicular accident on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos on Friday claimed the life of a driver after his vehicle reportedly lost control and overturned multiple times.

The tragic incident occurred at Charity Bus Stop, inward Iyana Isolo, in the early hours of the day, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Preliminary reports indicated that the driver of a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) lost control of the vehicle, which somersaulted several times before coming to a stop. The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in the driver’s death at the scene.

LASTMA officials, who were on routine traffic management duty in the Iyana Isolo area, responded swiftly to the emergency alongside officers from the Mosafejo Police Division.

The rescue team worked to remove the victim’s body from the wreckage while ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and preventing further accidents along the busy corridor.

Following the recovery operation, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the deceased’s remains to a public mortuary in line with established public health procedures.

The damaged vehicle was subsequently handed over to the police for further examination. Authorities have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and establish its immediate and underlying causes.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and described the loss as tragic.

He urged motorists to observe speed limits and comply with traffic regulations, particularly during late-night and early-morning journeys when visibility and alertness may be reduced.

Bakare-Oki also cautioned road users against reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and excessive speeding, stressing that adherence to safety measures remains essential to preventing avoidable road fatalities.

“The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount in the conduct of every road user. No journey is so urgent as to justify compromising safety,” he said.

The accident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways in Lagos, with authorities continuing to emphasize responsible driving and strict compliance with traffic laws to reduce fatalities on the state’s roads.
