FERMA Credits Tinubu’s Sukuk Funding For Road Rehabilitation, Urges Motorists To Protect Infrastructure

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for providing intervention funding through the Sukuk programme, saying the initiative has boosted road rehabilitation, improved infrastructure maintenance and created employment opportunities across the country.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FERMA, Emeka Agbasi, gave the commendation during an inspection of the rehabilitated 1.3-kilometre Suleja-Bwari Law School Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Agbasi said the funding had strengthened the agency’s capacity to undertake more road maintenance projects, improve road conditions and provide a better travel experience for motorists.

He attributed the progress to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing appreciation to Tinubu for prioritising infrastructure development.

According to him, the additional resources provided through the Sukuk programme have enabled FERMA to recover more roads, enhance their serviceability and expand employment opportunities through its maintenance interventions.

The FERMA chief executive also urged motorists and residents of communities hosting road projects to take responsibility for protecting the infrastructure against activities that could lead to premature deterioration.

He called on road users to avoid abusing road facilities and collaborate with the agency’s local offices to ensure the durability of rehabilitated roads.

Agbasi emphasised that preventive maintenance remained essential to preserving road infrastructure, noting that maintaining roads in good condition was more cost-effective than allowing them to deteriorate before undertaking major rehabilitation.

He further acknowledged the support and strategic guidance provided by the Federal Ministry of Works under the leadership of the Minister, David Umahi, and the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo.

Speaking on the Suleja-Bwari Law School Road project, Agbasi explained that the intervention involved rehabilitating an existing 1.3-kilometre stretch.

He added that feedback received from residents during the inspection indicated that the project had significantly improved conditions for the host community.

The road rehabilitation, funded through Sukuk proceeds, forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve road connectivity, enhance transportation and sustain the condition of federal highways nationwide.

FERMA reiterated the importance of cooperation between the agency, motorists and host communities in safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring that investments in road rehabilitation deliver lasting benefits to Nigerians.
