FG Flags Off N178.1bn Reconstruction Of Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road

The Federal Government has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road, a N178.1 billion project aimed at improving connectivity, enhancing security, and stimulating economic activities along one of northern Nigeria’s key transport corridors.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Tuesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, described the project as the fulfilment of a campaign promise made ahead of the 2023 general elections. He said the reconstruction presents an opportunity to correct decades of neglect on a road considered vital for linking northern Nigeria with the South-West.

Tinubu noted that despite its strategic importance as one of the shortest routes to Lagos and other parts of the South-West, the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road had remained in a deplorable condition for many years, limiting economic opportunities and posing security challenges.

Governor Sani commended the President and the Federal Executive Council for approving the project, describing it as a major intervention that would boost socio-economic development in the state. He also said improved security under the current administration had restored confidence among farmers and significantly reduced banditry, particularly along the Abuja–Kaduna highway.

He urged residents to take ownership of the project by supporting its successful execution while promoting peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance across the state.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the reconstruction demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to delivering on his promises. He described the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road as a critical economic route that, upon completion, would facilitate trade, create jobs, and strengthen security across Kaduna and neighbouring states.

Umahi also praised Governor Sani for persistently advocating for the project, noting that his efforts contributed to securing federal approval.

The minister explained that the Federal Government’s borrowing strategy is focused largely on infrastructure development, particularly road construction, which he described as a catalyst for economic growth and national development.

Responding to concerns over public borrowing, Umahi said the administration inherited severely deteriorated infrastructure and was investing in durable road projects that would improve transportation, expand economic activities, and enhance security across the country.
