FG Plans CNG-Powered Buses For Nigerian Airports
The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses at Nigerian airports as part of efforts to promote cleaner, more affordable and sustainable transportation.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this after a meeting with the founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Innoson Group and Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, Chief Innocent Chukwuma.
Keyamo expressed appreciation to Chukwuma for his continued support for Nigerian airports through the supply of locally manufactured Innoson buses over the years.
He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting indigenous vehicle manufacturers and strengthening local production in the transportation sector.
According to the minister, discussions during the meeting centred on the possibility of supplying CNG-powered buses to airports as the government intensifies efforts to expand the adoption of natural gas as an alternative fuel for transportation.
The initiative is expected to support the government’s drive towards cleaner energy, reduce reliance on conventional fuels and promote the use of locally manufactured vehicles across the aviation sector.
Keyamo also highlighted the need to improve the design of airport shuttle buses, particularly regarding the number of passenger seats and the space available for luggage.
He observed that buses with excessive seating capacity often leave passengers struggling to accommodate their baggage, making airport transfers less convenient.
The minister therefore urged that future buses supplied to airports should be designed to provide sufficient room for both passengers and their luggage.
He said the adjustment would improve passenger comfort and make transportation between airport terminals and other destinations more convenient.
The proposed introduction of CNG-powered buses forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to promote gas-powered transportation while supporting indigenous manufacturers and improving service delivery across Nigeria’s aviation industry.
