FRSC Intensifies Road Safety Campaign In Ogun Ahead Of Ember Months

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has intensified public enlightenment and traffic law enforcement as part of efforts to prevent road crashes during the ember months.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, on Monday in Ota.

Odunsi said the command had partnered with transport unions, communities and security agencies to reduce road crashes and improve safety on highways during the period.

He noted that road traffic usually increases between September and December, often accompanied by a rise in road crashes.

According to him, the FRSC remains committed to educating motorists and other road users on the importance of protecting lives and complying with traffic regulations.

He urged motorists to obey road signs, use seat belts, avoid overloading and exercise patience while driving.

The FRSC spokesperson also dismissed the belief that the ember months have supernatural influences that cause road crashes, attributing accidents largely to human factors.

He identified fatigue, overloading, poor vehicle maintenance and excessive speed, particularly in the rush to meet end-of-year targets, as some of the major causes of crashes.

Odunsi disclosed that special patrols had been deployed along highways to monitor compliance with speed limits, while rescue teams would operate round the clock to respond promptly to emergencies.

He added that pre-trip inspections were ongoing at motor parks to ensure that vehicles and drivers were fit for journeys.

The FRSC urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, night journeys and driving while fatigued.

Odunsi also advised motorists to properly service their vehicles, reduce speed and cooperate with road safety personnel throughout the period.

He emphasised that road safety was a shared responsibility, adding, “Arriving late is better than not arriving at all.”
