NIMASA, Maritime Journalists Partner to Drive Blue Economy Development

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has partnered with the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) to advance innovation, human capital development and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s Blue Economy.

The partnership will be highlighted at the 2026 Maritime Training Summit and Awards scheduled to hold in Lagos, bringing together regulators, industry operators, policymakers, training institutions and maritime experts.

With the theme, “The Power of Innovation in a Future-Ready Maritime Training Agenda,” the summit will examine the role of technology, modern training and capacity development in preparing Nigeria’s maritime workforce to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the Blue Economy.

Speaking on the partnership, NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the collaboration was consistent with the agency’s mandate to promote safety, security, indigenous shipping development and the sustainable utilisation of Nigeria’s marine resources.

Mobereola stressed the importance of investing in skilled manpower and innovation-driven training, noting that such investments were critical to increasing the maritime sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product, creating employment and strengthening the country’s competitiveness in global trade.

He said NIMASA remained committed to developing the human capacity needed to participate effectively in the estimated $1.4 trillion global Blue Economy.

According to him, the partnership with AMJON was designed to bring government, industry and the media together to identify practical steps towards improving training, certification and technology adoption in the maritime sector.

The President of AMJON, Vera Osokpo, commended NIMASA for its continued support for maritime development, particularly through its regulatory interventions and capacity-building initiatives.

Osokpo said the summit would provide stakeholders with an opportunity to identify existing training gaps and develop solutions capable of equipping Nigerian seafarers and other maritime professionals with the skills required to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

The 2026 AMJON Maritime Training Summit and Awards is expected to conclude with a communique containing actionable recommendations to guide government policies and industry practices in maritime training and Blue Economy development.
