FRSC Promotes Road Safety Through Students’ Quiz

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ikorodu Unit Command, has intensified efforts to promote road safety awareness among young Nigerians through a Road Safety Club Quiz Competition organised to mark the 2026 Children’s Day celebration.

The event, held on Thursday at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, brought together pupils and students from 16 primary and secondary schools across the area.

Participating schools included Hossana High School, Purple Shores School, Cedarwood School, Kaztal Academy, Future Generation School, Lara Narrow Way School, De Best College, God’s Heritage School and Mother’s Vine School, among others.

Speaking at the event, Assistant Corps Commander of the FRSC Ikorodu Unit, Kamal Kasali, said the initiative was aimed at instilling road safety consciousness in children from an early age amid growing concerns over accidents involving students nationwide.

According to him, exposing children to road safety education at a young age would help nurture responsible citizens and contribute to national development.

Kasali noted that the programme forms part of the FRSC’s broader strategy to educate pupils and students on safe road use through platforms such as the Road Safety Club, Youth Safety Education Programme and School Bus Scheme.

He disclosed that more than 400 students participated in activities including a road walk, talent hunt, quiz competition and award presentations.

Also addressing the gathering, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Hamzat, urged students to prioritise their safety and adopt responsible road-use habits.

He advised children below the age of 12 not to occupy the front seats of vehicles and encouraged them to always wear seat belts and obey traffic regulations.

Hamzat also cautioned against crossing highways indiscriminately, stressing that children’s lives are invaluable and must be protected.

In his remarks, a guest speaker, Mr Alao Joseph of the Lagos College of Medical Sciences, Ikorodu, commended the FRSC for using educational activities to promote safety awareness among children.

Joseph announced a scholarship award for the overall winner of the competition as part of the institution’s support for the initiative.

A teacher from Cedarwood School, Mrs Ifeyinwa Ene, described the competition as a valuable platform that would encourage pupils and students to become more safety-conscious in their daily activities.

One of the participants, Okoh Chisom, an SSS 2 student of Hossana High School, said the programme had improved her understanding of road safety and responsible road use.

At the end of the competition, Hossana High School emerged overall winner, represented by Godwin Nwachukwu and Praise Alex, both JSS 2 students. Kaztal Academy secured second place, while De Best College finished third.

The overall winner received a scholarship sponsored by the Lagos College of Medical Sciences, alongside educational materials and gifts provided by the FRSC and its partners. Other outstanding participants were also rewarded with school bags, water bottles, food packs and other items.
