Lagos Moves To Prosecute Speeding Motorists On Coastal Road

The Lagos State Government has warned motorists against excessive speeding and reckless driving on the Lagos Coastal Road, saying offenders who violate traffic regulations will be arrested and prosecuted.

The warning followed a fatal road crash recorded along the Coastal Road inward Eko Hotel on Friday, which claimed one life and left three others seriously injured.

The accident involved a grey Lexus Jeep 350 with registration number LSD 554 KV. Preliminary security reports indicated that the vehicle lost control while in motion, collided with a roadside pole and overturned.

Following the crash, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were monitoring traffic along the axis, immediately mobilised to the scene.

The affected section of the road was secured while emergency responders and Good Samaritans assisted in extricating the three injured victims from the wreckage.

The victims were subsequently conveyed to Duck-Yard Hospital within the Military Zone for urgent medical treatment.

Security personnel from Victoria Island also reinforced the response operation, while LASTMA officials removed the mangled vehicle from the carriageway to prevent further accidents and restore normal traffic flow.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution while driving, particularly on high-speed corridors.

Bakare-Oki cautioned motorists against speeding, reckless driving and other behaviours capable of causing loss of control and endangering the lives of other road users.

Also reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, urged motorists using the Coastal Road and other roads across the state to prioritise safety over speed.

Osiyemi said the state government would not tolerate conduct that puts motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users at risk.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation urges all motorists plying the Coastal Road and across all Lagos roads to put lives before speed. Excessive speeding and reckless driving place motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users at grave risk,” he said.

The commissioner further warned that motorists who disregard speed regulations or engage in actions capable of endangering lives would be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He advised motorists to reduce their speed, obey traffic regulations and exercise caution to ensure that they and other road users reach their destinations safely.
