Oborevwori Orders Julius Berger To Fix Washed-Out East-West Road In Delta

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to commence urgent remedial works on the washed-out section of the East-West Road around Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

The directive followed the collapse of the section of the federal highway after several days of heavy rainfall and flooding, which disrupted traffic and forced motorists and commuters to seek alternative routes.

The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Asaba.

According to Aniagwu, the governor ordered the intervention in response to the hardship caused by the damaged road to motorists, commuters, residents, transport operators, traders and businesses operating along the busy corridor.

He explained that although the East-West Road is a Federal Government infrastructure, the governor considered the situation too urgent to await bureaucratic processes, given the importance of the route to economic and social activities in the Niger Delta.

Aniagwu said Oborevwori had therefore directed Julius Berger, which is handling major infrastructure projects in the state, to undertake remedial works on the failed portion of the road.

“Governor Oborevwori has consequently directed the intervention of Julius Berger, a leading construction company handling major infrastructure projects in the state, to undertake remedial works on the failed portion of the road,” he said.

The commissioner said the intervention was expected to restore traffic flow and ease the difficulties being experienced by road users who depend on the route for daily commuting and the movement of goods and services.

He described the East-West Road as a major economic artery linking several communities across the Niger Delta, stressing that prolonged disruption could have wider consequences for transportation, trade and businesses.

Aniagwu urged motorists using the affected corridor to exercise caution while the remedial works are being carried out.

He also assured residents that the state government would continue to collaborate with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners to address critical infrastructure challenges under the administration’s MORE Agenda.

The affected section reportedly collapsed on Tuesday following days of heavy rainfall and flooding, resulting in significant disruption to movement along the corridor.
