One Dead, Two Rescued As Building Collapses During Demolition In Lagos

One person has been confirmed dead while two others were rescued after a two-storey building undergoing manual demolition collapsed in the Aboru area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026, at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, during demolition work on the structure.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its Alpha Eagle Response Team was deployed from the Cappa, Oshodi Response Unit at about 12:56 a.m. following a distress call.

Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered that some workers had been trapped beneath the rubble. LASEMA subsequently activated the State Emergency Response Plan and assumed command of the rescue operation.

During the search and rescue effort, two adult males were successfully pulled out alive from the debris. They received emergency first aid from personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being evacuated to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.

However, the body of another adult male was recovered from beneath the collapsed building.

The rescue operation was conducted by a combined team of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS. The affected area was also cordoned off to protect residents and provide emergency personnel with unhindered access to the site.

Community leaders and security agencies also supported the emergency responders during the operation.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

Oke-Osanyintolu urged developers and members of the public to strictly adhere to building regulations and ensure that demolition and construction activities are handled by certified professionals.

He also called on residents to promptly report suspected unsafe building or demolition activities through the state’s toll-free emergency numbers, 767 and 112.

The LASEMA Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through rapid emergency response and the continued improvement of emergency management infrastructure across the state.
